Betts was the director of “Novitiate” from her own script and was awarded the Special Jury Award for Best Director at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. Betts also directed the film “The Carrier,” centered on an HIV-positive mother from Africa who is determined to protect your child so that the child does and never will be born with HIV/AIDS.

Based on real incidents, a lawyer assists an owner of a funeral house to save his family’s business from the encroachment of a giant corporation by exposing a web of power, race and injustice.

With Gary’s assistance, O’Keefe is able to take on Raymond Loewen’s (Bill Camp’s) company. The audience is able to be plunged into the deceit and complexities of the funeral industry while taking a look at Gary’s unorthodox, affluent background. The film was directed by Maggie Betts, who also co-wrote the script with Doug Wright.
