People saw Natalie Portman, with a gun and a crew, against a misty forest backdrop and then immediately thought of survival, war, and Predator alien encounter. Needless to add. Annihilation and Arrival have raised the curtains for a completely new class of movies that leaves viewers thinking “Maybe that’s how Earth will encounter the extraterrestrials”
Carl Sagan wrote in his book that it is not necessary for the extraterrestrials to have two eyes, two hands or two legs just like humans, they shall evolve and acquire skills depending on their own environmental pressures. This movie has lived through that idea in bringing up a story that shows how life from a different planet gradually neutralizes/recreates life on earth through morbid changes of all beings at the cellular level. It does not shows the usual alien things and makes you question yourself about where we come from and what we are. Loved the visuals which Portman’s character describes as “it was not nightmarish all the time, it was beautiful” and I agree. The music brings everything alive, you will be left with an eerie feeling.

Just watched the most stunning visuals one can get in a Netflix film. Everyone talks about the visuals but no one talks about the eerie music which gives the creepy vibes to the movie. Most of the dialogues are just “Don’t Know!” but if you clearly mark the scenes then you can understand the plot easily. Don’t need to dissect the language like “Arrival” but it’s a good movie for a one-time watch. How is it possible to ‘refract’ DNA‘, how is it possible to do something like without any observable energy source to handle the needs to transformation and expansion, central sentience driving the entire refraction.
All female cast with a mediocre plot of “people slowly die one at a time while exploring a new environment” but wow did it completely destroy my expectations and instead it made me try to understand everything. It wasn’t just the mystery of “the shimmer” but a mystery in the characters that got me stuck on the screen.
