The production has started in Adelaide on SA’s very first Netflix commission program Gymnastics Academy: A Second Chance! Written and produced by South Australian Clay Glen of Glen Pictures, with major production funds by the SAFC! Maddy Cornell (Emily Morris) is a former world champion Australian gymnast and coach is impressed by Kyra’s talent and invites Kyra to participate in the Australian Elite Gymnastics Program on a trial.
The show follows 14-year-old Kyra Berry (Jada Lee Henry) who is an American gymnast who is injured on her knee. She is then invited by former world gymnast and world champion Australian gymnast Maddy Cornell (Emily Morris) who is now a coach to join the elite gymnastics Program. It’s her second chance, but also her final. The series of 10 episodes is the first Netflix commission series for South Australia, outside of co-productions like Pine Gap.
