The Gentlemen (2020) Movie Review | The Return of Guy Ritchie

I'll start off by saying, I'm surprised at how much I liked this movie. I'm a big fan of Guy Ritchie, The Gentlemen (2020) Movie Review.

I’ll start off by saying, I’m surprised at how much I liked this movie. I’m a big fan of Guy Ritchie, The Gentlemen (2020) Movie Review. I’ve been anticipating this movie but had some reservations. It’s been a while since he dabbled into this genre so before we talk about the movie. I’m gonna tell you a little bit about the history of Guy Ritchie movies why this one’s important because that’s gonna set up.

Why it’s good this is kind of a review it’s more of a recommendation. I’m not gonna spoil anything but I’m gonna tell you what works about the movie and who among you is most likely to like this movie as much as I do so by no means is Guy Ritchie invented the gangster genre but he did invent this sort of pulpy British gangster genre with his first feature film Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Which came out in 1998, I absolutely loved that movie it was one of my favorites and college. I had the poster on my wall and I say the poster because it was an original print love the movie love everything about it. The Gentlemen (2020) Movie Review, The Return of Guy Ritchie, The Gentlemen Review. It’s a lot of fun it kicked off Jason Statham’s career and just it’s significant.

I loved it and then he followed it up with what I think is an even better movie snatch another Popey gangster movie and the thing that’s so great about those is they don’t forget to be entertaining. They’re not really like Quentin Tarantino. They’re spiritually similar snappy dialogue fun characters sort of a hyper-real type of an environment.

It’s based in reality but it’s a little off-kilter from our reality absolutely loved it then he did a really awful movie called swept away with his wife at the time Madonna and then came back to the gangster genre with a movie called revolver. I still love but that one was very cerebral and sort of metaphorical and well.

I liked it I can understand why other people wouldn’t like it. It was a reach for him and not nearly as successful in terms of entertainment as his first two only to come back again with a more fun one called rock and Rolla in terms of the three that I like the gangster flicks.

I would put that one at the bottom because it’s fun. It’s good and the characters are great but it just doesn’t have the magic that those first two have and then he left the genre for about ten years. The Gentlemen (2020) Movie Review, The Return of Guy Ritchie, The Gentlemen Review. He went on to do Sherlock Holmes. The sequel The Man From UNCLE which I liked didn’t love King Arthur which got panned critically but I liked it only because I liked his style.

It was just really metal and then most recently he did Aladdin which yeah it was commercially successful but it is certainly not a movie that Guy Ritchie fans loved. In fact, I bet a lot of you were surprised to even hear me say that he directed Aladdin. Let’s get real it’s not for people like me.

It’s not for Guy Ritchie fans only to come back less than a year later with the gentleman. We’re only three weeks into 2020. I think I found one of my favorite movies of the year. I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t make it into the top ten. If it does not that means 2020 is going to be an amazing year for movies and unlike his others.

This one is like tailor-made for movie lovers now I know movie lovers like his other movies a lot and even love them but this one has movie references. There’s a reference to Francis Ford Coppola is the conversation. They talk about cinema and scope and scale and aspect ratio gets a reference which is very nerdy stuff.

There’s a screenplay sort of involved but it’s not overly done it’s just there enough to sort of give a wink and a nod to movie lovers. I think got Ritchie’s letting people like me. Those of you that are like me know that he is back and I think he’s back in a big way. I’m super excited about it again.

I was watching the movie and I was really surprised at how good it was because I did not expect it to work as well as his original movies. It’s not like lock stock or snatches it feels like Guy Ritchie. The Gentlemen (2020) Movie Review, The Return of Guy Ritchie, The Gentlemen Review. It’s aged a little bit it’s a little more mature. It’s smoother it’s more cinematic the editing is better the performances are stronger the others particularly lock stock are just like a punk rock they’re gritty.
