This isn’t a good thing for Rachita because she believes this is a temporary job that she was selected for due to her ethnicity and not for her talents. The story is set in Birmingham, DI Ray introduces the audience to Rachita Ray who is a Leicester-born police officer who is assigned a case that forces her to confront a long-standing personal struggle in her British identity as well as the nuances of her South Asian heritage. Rachita is given the job she’s been awaiting when she is asked to take part in an investigation into a murder. Rachita is well-prepared for the task, but she’s not taking into consideration what the investigation will bring about.

Ray is quick to realize that suspects are not likely to be found guilty, and the evidence against two brothers of a British Hindu family is flimsy and his efforts to convey the evidence to his superiors end up being ineffective. All the prejudices and desire to end the investigation quickly show that nobody wants to hear from Rachita until the time that the investigation leads to a more shady crime.

The four-part series centers around Birmingham Police Officer Rachita Ray, who is assigned an investigation that requires her to confront the personal tension between her British identity as well as the culture of her South Asian heritage. The story follows the investigation of murder while investigating issues of racism within the workplace. Ray is a female police officer who is elevated to the homicide division to examine what is referred to as an “culturally specific murder”.
