While Greenleaf is plenty intense, with significant issues aplenty. A context of the morally challenged, compromised characters of a couple of fictitious Christian megachurches — the show invites empathy, even admiration, and attachment, to several of the flawed Greenleaf family members. This is probably both a strength and weakness in a cultural climate that would prefer we liberal white people be “colorblind” rather than seriously engage the ongoing presence and effects of racism.
